french open 2006
Day-12 at Roland Garros was full of excitement. Center court was overcrowded and many more round the world were looking forward for the one match, Svetlana Kuznetsova Vs Nicole Vaidisova.
Nicole Vaidisova, a Czek teenager, Seventeen year old and 16th seed in french open, emerged as Giant Killer, knocking out top seeded Amelie Mauresmo and Wimbledon champion Venus Williams in successive matches to enter the semi-final. Stage was set for another history in making. If she could hold-on her winning stake for two more matches then she will become the second youngest winner of the French Open after Monica Seles, who was 16 when she won the clay court Grand Slam in 1990.
Back to center court. For first two sets, for more that 2 hours Vaidisova was dominant. At one point she had a significant lead of 1 set and she was serving for the match when it was 5-4 in the second set. But Kuznetsova broke that serve and snatched second set away from her after a tough tie breaker. Now set score was, 1-1. In first game of third set, Kuznetsova broke Vaidisova's serve one more time and this was the turning point of match. Then, it was visible that being less experienced, Czek was finding it difficult to hold back at that point. She made few mistakes at some crucial points and finally lost third set with 6-2.
In Kuznetsova's words, " I think I benefited from my experience. I've played more often on centre court than she has and I knew it was possible to turn the match around ".
This way, Nicole's journey at Roland Garros ended. But as it is said, one journey is ended in the start of another. Its just the beginning in her life. I wish to see her, lifting some grand slam trophy, soon. No matter, what happened on day-12, its beyond doubt that she is the star of this year's French Open!
Well, about men's singles, this year, one interesting thing happened in French Open. Top four seeds managed to be among top four contenders at Roland Garros. Both semi final matches are scheduled today. My prediction is that, top two seeds will manage their way to the final. So, i am expecting the final match between world no. 1 Roger federer and spaniard Rafael Nadal.
I think, this year's greatest upset is going to be in the final, when Nadal will beat Federer. Anyone ready to bet??
